Factory hitch ships EU-spec 13-pin; every SA trailer and caravan is 7-pin. A cheap adaptor plug from the usual sites does not reliably work — the dealer will swap the connector at no charge, ask for it before your first tow.

What solved it
Confirmed — asked for the swap before my first Baviaanskloof run and it was done free of charge, five minutes at the service desk. Test the full circuit (indicators, brakes) before you actually load a trailer, not just that it clicks in.

Seconding the "test it properly" advice. A physical 13-to-7 adaptor plug from the usual accessory sites is the tempting shortcut but multiple members report it doesn't reliably carry the signal — the dealer swap is the only fix people report actually working.
