The classic Tankwa loop: the R355 — the longest road between towns in SA with no fuel — through the national park, then up Ouberg Pass to Sutherland for a night under the SALT skies. The R355's sharp gravel is famous for eating tyres; the convoy carries a communal plug kit but your spares are your own.

Overnight at Wupperthal Mission via the Algeria valley. Uitkyk Pass itself has been tar since 2019 — the work is the corrugated gravel either side of it, honest but rough after winter rains. Deflate at Algeria, re-inflate at Pakhuis. XWD trims comfortable throughout; FWD trims welcome in the dry.

The Southern Berg gravel day: up the lower pass as far as the SA border post and the viewpoint below the switchbacks. Straight talk — the SA border post sits at the foot of the pass, and the climb beyond it is legally 4x4-and-low-range only. Officials inspect there and turn unsuitable vehicles back before the ascent, which means every T1 and T2. We drive to where the vehicles belong and stop there, with the whole escarpment in front of us.

The full west-to-east. Willowmore to Zandvlakte is easy gravel; the reserve section to Poortjie is the real thing — narrow, steep, river crossings, no towing service. This is the outer edge of what an XWD T2 should attempt: dry conditions only, convoy support mandatory, and the chapter lead holds a no-go call on river levels the morning of.
